WHAT WE LIKE

2024

Cheap and always available! This is how we expect our food. Preferably produced under the best conditions for humans, animals, and nature. At the same time, one wonders who still associates „chicken“ with live chicken these days? Especially when you are served nuggets in the shape of dinosaurs. If at all, we prefer to associate our food with images of a farm idyll, mostly learned from advertising. And this is despite the fact that many people are now well aware of the abuses in industrial agriculture. Along with the fictitious daily routine of a farmer, the photographs show various aspects of industrial agriculture. This also includes the processing of the products. For example, the current working conditions in the meat industry are also discussed in the media as „modern slavery“. Through an exploration of this theme, the image series „What we like“ was created. Together, Katharina Schweizer (fashion and costume design) and Max Kühl (photography) developed a surreal visual world in which optimization and picture book conditions go hand in hand. Specially designed for the respective motif, outfits and equipment not only reinforce the surreal image aesthetics but also make reference to the theme. With their visual aesthetics that superficially resemble fashion photography, the surreal motifs are intended to introduce the viewer only at a second glance to topics such as food waste, factory farming, the administration of medicines or chemicals used.
